5 Qualities of a Good Dental Provider

Mar 20 • 3 minute read

Let’s be honest and tell it as it is!  Many people are not big fans of dentists. It can be quite challenging convincing many individuals to visit the dentist. Amidst your despair, it may become apparent to you that perhaps some dental providers are not ideal for your dental needs after all. You may begin to wonder if your dental provider has the necessary characteristics that encourage you to visit their office.  If that is your line of thinking, then you might be surprised to learn that, in reality, there are some qualities you should be searching for in a dental specialist, whether for yourself or your family. The good news is that you have a large variety of dentists to choose from in most communities.

As you search for a dental provider, here are some excellent qualities to consider:

Knowledge
The first thing to try and evaluate in a dental provider is their depth of experience and knowledge. It doesn’t mean you should dismiss young dentists; it means you should pay attention to how the dentist handles your case.

Most often experienced dental providers are easier to work with and they have the ability to take the anxiety and fear out of the equation. It gives you room to breathe, knowing that you are in safe hands.

Knowledge is not always determined by school degrees or certifications.  Instead, it’s something that a dental provider accumulates through many years of “hands-on” experience.

Organizational Skills
You’ll likely discover that dental providers in your community and anywhere else possess some level of organizational skills. They often have one or two assistants just to keep an organized schedule.

Why is this important? It is a crucial characteristic to look for in a dentist because you want to know when your doctor is available and how you can reach them. If you have a large family, you may find it challenging to schedule appointments that work with your family’s schedule.  However, some dental providers with extremely organized schedules can accommodate you.

The bottom line is that you need to have the ability to track your dental provider at all times, so you can reach out when necessary.

Teaching
Another important trait of an elite dental provider is their ability to openly educate you about oral health. It is crucial for you to use a dental provider who is honest about the situation.

Your dentist should be open with you about dental treatment recommendations, the methods behind them, and the reasons. This information can help you preserve not only your dental health but also your overall well-being.

One of the primary reasons people dread that dental chair is they are utterly ignorant of what’s going on. They see the complex instruments, and they are intimidated.  A good dental provider encourages questions from patients and addresses the questions in a thorough manner.

Kindness
A tender touch is what separates good dental providers and bad ones.

Most patients will change dental providers because of this issue, so it’s not a small matter. Ultimately, this can easily induce a phobia and keep you miles away from the nearest dental office.

A dental provider should be kind and have a light touch.  This is one of the most valuable skills to search for as you evaluate your next dental provider.

Pleasant Atmosphere
Although this is not an individual quality of a dentist, you cannot ignore the importance of a pleasant, inviting atmosphere.

When patients are sitting in the waiting area, it is hard not to notice the look on their faces. Are they excited to be there? Are they having a positive experience? Are they looking forward to visiting the dental provider?

Maybe it was the media that popularized the idea that visiting the dentist is a necessary evil. It really doesn’t have to be. Look for dental providers who organize events, tours, and even parties. You will enjoy going to the dental office and look forward to your next visit!

You’ll be happy you did.
